The design concept for the Swimming Stadium for the XX Mediterranean Games 2026 in Taranto, for the performance of international competitive swimming activities, was developed mainly following environmental, social and economic sustainability criteria.

The idea of a light roof that shades and shelters the swimming stadium is reminiscent of a sail stretched over the athletes and spectators which also reinforces and enhances the connection of the archaeological park with the sea.

The intervention intends to create an architecture that is iconic and integrated into the context at the same time. The innovation of the proposal lies mainly in the structure and materials of the roof, as well as in the sustainability strategies adopted in the intervention.
The use of super-light materials combined with a reticular steel structure makes the stadium roof suitable for large spans and with an excellent reaction to earthquakes.

A project with high technological value, integrated with the naturalness of the site which enhances its landscape context and historical pre-existences. The work is of great interest for the city, both for the excellence of the function and for the impact that the overall intervention has on the redevelopment process of the area.
